COMMUNITY NEWS

  • More than 5,500 geocachers will travel to Morgantown and nearby areas for GeoWoodstock—claimed as the largest geocaching event in the U.S.—from May 22 to May 25. The main event will be held at Mylan Park on May 24 and a noon introductory session will take place at the Hazel and J.W. Ruby Community Center Event Complex as local parks and trails prepare for increased traffic.  West Virginia University
  • Yesterday on MetroNews This Morning, WVU President Gordon Gee delivered his final commencement address while school systems and the state BOE urged the governor and lawmakers to address concerns over PEIA and proposals to ease challenges for emergency ambulance work — in sports, WVU claimed the Big XII baseball title but will need to reset for the tournament after being swept.  MetroNews

CRIME NEWS

  • Daron Buford, 34, of Detroit was arrested Friday at the Woodline apartment complex in Morgantown for brandishing a gun—he did this at about 1 p.m.—and a search warrant later turned up drugs and paraphernalia that led to charges of drug conspiracy, firearm possession and wanton endangerment.  WDTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The West Virginia Public Education Collaborative is marking 10 years of Remake Learning Days in Morgantown with hands-on activities available through May 25—events include learning about kale, beekeeping, and soil presentations that let kids work with local professionals. Schools, libraries, museums, and parks host these challenges to help students build practical problem-solving skills.  MetroNews
  • Blackthorn, a new Salesforce event management tool for Student Experience, will launch this fall to support scheduling for campus tours and admissions events. From July 29, students will register on Blackthorn for tours on Nov. 1 and later while those booking until Oct. 31 will use TargetX—licensed staff may work in both systems as TargetX is decommissioned in late August.  West Virginia University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Morgantown Municipal Airport (MGW) is on track to serve over 10,000 passengers this year, which will qualify it for $1 million in FAA capital funding. The airport anticipates steady growth in air travel that will support future improvements.  WV News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Researchers from the Department of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy at WVU are recruiting parents of preterm babies aged 3 to 7 months for a study that will take less than one hour in the WVU baby laboratory, where sensors will record the baby’s tummy time play. Participants will earn a $50 gift card upon completing the visit—this study is approved by the WVU Institutional Review Board.  West Virginia University

SPORTS NEWS

  • The West Virginia University golf team finished its season in fifth place at the GOLFWEEK National Golf Invitational on Sunday at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Arizona by shooting even par—freshman Ryan Leach earned a ninth-place finish and coach Sean Covich praised the young players’ efforts for next season.  West Virginia University
  • Morgantown beat Martinsburg by 10 to 5 in the WVSLA Semifinals on Saturday, as seen in a photo gallery (photo gallery by Christopher C. Davis). Other state championship games showed Morgantown winning 18 to 7 over Linsly in Boys Division I while Mountain State LC won 14 to 8 over Jefferson Co., University beat Morgantown 10 to 6 in Girls Division I, and John Marshall edged Musselman 8 to 7.  MetroNews
