EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ At its meeting Wednesday, the West Virginia Board of Education voted unanimously to support a resolution that urges the state legislature and Governor Patrick Morrisey to keep public employee health insurance sustainable and affordable; all 55 county boards have taken similar steps + a bill to end PEIA failed in committee earlier this year. - ➤ New West Virginia University President Michael T. Benson toured Reynolds Hall on Wednesday and met with faculty and students to discuss campus needs and his ideas for expanding support programs. He will start as president in July and plans to boost initiatives—like career closets and study abroad funds—to help students succeed. The Dominion Post
- ➤ The WVU community, family and friends are invited to join nine Commencement ceremonies at the Coliseum from today until May 18—University leaders will address the graduates and five honorary degrees will be awarded while ceremonies are also live streamed for those not in attendance. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The West Virginia Division of Highways will soon begin replacing over 100 curb ramps in Morgantown to meet new ADA standards — work outside downtown will start next week while downtown projects begin mid-June, with SQP Construction Group set to finish early August. WDTV
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ The WVU track team traveled to Lawrence, Kansas for the Big 12 Outdoor Championships, which run May 15–17. Today they will compete in the women's heptathlon, long jump, 800 meters and 3,000-meter steeplechase as the meet continues. West Virginia University
- ➤ After opening their series on May 15, the No. 16 WVU baseball team plays Kansas today at 6:30 p.m. at Kendrick Family Ballpark and will finish the series tomorrow at 1 p.m.; a win or an Arizona State loss will clinch the Big 12 title for the Mountaineers who are 40-10 this season. - ➤ Team quarterfinal and semifinal matches at the WVSSAC state tennis tournament were played on Thursday—championship matches for Class AAA Boys, Class AAA Girls with Morgantown against Huntington, and Class AA/A events will begin today as the individual tournament follows later.
