COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On May 10 and 11, Morgantown Mutual Aid held a Freedom Farming event at 41 Dorsey Lane where local volunteers prepared garden plots for guerrilla gardening—allowing residents to plant fruits, vegetables and wildflowers. The group aims to build local food networks and invites more members to join its work at weekly meetings at The Grind, 168 Willey St.  The Daily Athenaeum

CULTURE NEWS

  • The West Virginia & Regional History Center has opened three new exhibits at the Downtown Library Atrium and John D. Rockefeller IV Gallery. One display focuses on Senator Harley Kilgore’s debate with scientist Vannevar Bush over NSF formation and runs through the end of fall semester while two smaller exhibits commemorate the 160-year anniversaries of General Lee’s surrender and the Thirteenth Amendment — both are on view until June 30.  West Virginia University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Funds from the opioid lawsuit against AmeriSource Bergen, Cardinal Health and McKesson are being sent to local governments while Huntington and Cabell County still await a ruling after their federal case was denied a public nuisance claim (the Fourth Circuit will soon decide on the issue).  West Virginia Public Broadcasting
  • The Morgantown Utility Board approved $40,000 for a study that will examine a $64 million set of water system upgrades including improvements to the water treatment plant, new water mains, and repairs to storage tanks + booster station designs. The board also approved a $213,100 contract for architectural work on a new maintenance shop to support large utility vehicles and office needs at its Green Bag Road headquarters.  The Dominion Post
  • The WVU Army ROTC Mountaineer Battalion commissioned 19 cadets as second lieutenants yesterday at 6 p.m. at the Mountainlair’s Mountaineer Room—11 joined active duty, seven entered the Army National Guard and one delayed his plan to attend law school. This commission marks the largest class since 2021 and included five Distinguished Military Graduates.  West Virginia University

  • Cross Lanes native Tyler Collet—who earned his spot with a record-setting 10-shot win in the PGA Professional Championship—will tee off today at 1:53 p.m. at Quail Hollow Golf Club. He aims to become the low club pro if he makes the cut.  MetroNews
  • Morgantown won 4-1 over University at Dale Miller Field in the Class AAAA Region I Section 2 tournament as senior pitcher Vincent Aloi threw a complete game in 69 pitches; University will host Preston today in an elimination game — the winner will visit Morgantown tomorrow.  MetroNews
  • No. 17 WVU baseball (40-10, 19-6 Big 12) opens a three-game series against Kansas at Kendrick Family Ballpark today with a chance to secure the Big 12 title if they win a game or if Arizona State falls short. Coach Steve Sabins said his team, despite recent bullpen struggles, will stick to its normal lineup (keeping the routine is key) as they aim to close out the season strong.  The Dominion Post
  • Two Mountaineers from the West Virginia University tennis team, redshirt junior Maja Dodik and senior Michaela Kucharova, were named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team. Kucharova earned her third honor—while Dodik received her second—as both met the required GPA and playing standards.  West Virginia University
