BUSINESS NEWS

  • High Street Morgantown is suing Primanti Bros. West Virginia LLC and Primanti Corp. for breaching a 10-year lease at its 485 High Street property after the restaurant closed in August 2024 and stopped paying rent; the suit filed May 7 seeks over $870K in unpaid rent and fees.  The Dominion Post
  • West Virginia small businesses and nonprofits are urged by the U.S. Small Business Administration to apply for low-interest drought disaster loans by June 1 — applications must be submitted before the deadline.  WV News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Hope Gas’s Morgantown Connector pipeline now delivers natural gas, enhancing service reliability and backup during winter disruptions while boosting local energy production and future growth. The project, which received regulatory approval in 2024 and completed phased development, continues maintenance to support community needs + preserve easements.  The Dominion Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Five students from Clarksburg, Morgantown and nearby counties received the Aspirations in Computing award on Tuesday at the Innovation Center in the I-79 Technology Park (hosted by Agile5 Technologies). Kathryn Southall, a Robert C. Byrd High School senior, will study cybersecurity at Fairmont State University this fall.  The Dominion Post
  • Monongalia voters approved a renewed education levy Tuesday night (10,027 votes for, 2,659 against) that generates $35.6 million annually for extra programs like AP courses and arts, and reelected board members Dan Berry, Jennifer Hagerty and Mike Kelly, boosting community trust, according to Superintendent Eddie Campbell Jr.  The Dominion Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • West Virginia Division of Natural Resources advises residents to avoid handling baby wildlife because contact can harm animals and spread disease. The agency warns that possessing wild animals is illegal (fines up to $300, up to 100 days in jail) and urges people to simply observe nature.  WDTV
  • State Treasurer Larry Pack has called for a special legislative session to consider suspending the 35.7 cents state gas tax amid rising fuel prices. The proposal (if approved) could use revenue surplus funds to offset a shortfall, as prices have surged over 50 percent since Feb. 28.  WDTV
  • West Virginia invites veterans to join the Ascend Heroes program, offering $12,000 in relocation funds paid over 24 months. Gov. Morrisey said veterans who buy a home may convert any unused funds to a lump sum and have six months to settle in areas including Morgantown + surrounding areas.  The Dominion Post

HEALTH NEWS

  • Roman’s Wellness Center, owned by Morgantown native Stacy Roman, was named West Virginia Woman-Owned Small Business of the Year by the SBA. The center on Blue Horizon Drive uses alternative health care methods including acupuncture, massage therapy, facials and infrared sauna sessions to keep the community healthy.  The Dominion Post

SPORTS NEWS

  • Morgantown’s Mohigans won a 7-0 game over Wheeling Park with standout pitching by senior Maddie Wisman, moving the team one win away from a state tournament berth. They will host No. 6 Jefferson today at 5:30.  MetroNews
  • WVU baseball coach Steve Sabins has shaped an untraditional defense as the team, ranked 16th in fielding percentage nationally (few errors all season), prepares to host TCU in a three-game series starting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Coach Sabins’ strategy uses four shortstops to maintain strong play.  The Dominion Post
  • WVU baseball swept Kansas when power hitters launched key home runs that sparked a 10-run surge in Morgantown. Sean Smith’s critical homer (and Gavin Kelly’s five-game streak) helped the Mountaineers secure a 10-game win streak and set up their chance to host an NCAA Tournament Regional.  The Dominion Post
  • Former WVU women’s basketball guard Jordan Harrison made the Portland Fire roster on May 7 and was waived on May 11 to activate injured guard Kamiah Smalls - she may get picked up by another team soon.  The Dominion Post
