CULTURE NEWS

  • The 24th PattyFest festival will be held on Saturday, June 6 in Morgantown to celebrate Appalachian music and community tradition. The event will feature live tunes and local engagement.  WV News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Campus Read has chosen John Green's 2025 nonfiction book Everything is Tuberculosis as its focal read for Fall events that are open to the public; faculty and staff planning to use its themes in coursework should contact director Susan Lantz ([email protected]).  West Virginia University
  • WVU Cyber is launching a partnership with TWENTY to offer students internships and hands-on research in offensive cyber operations and AI-enabled systems; the collaboration will expand cybersecurity training (WVU officials said).  WVU Today
  • Graduate students are invited to apply for a three-day intensive research immersion workshop (improving skills and building community), with applications due before June 5.  West Virginia University
  • Hazel’s House of Hope partners with Bright Horizons to launch a WVU Child Learning Center Bright Space near Krepps Park where kids get art, reading, and play areas. A Community Yard Sale on Saturday, May 30 at 201 Laurel St. will support the initiative (donations welcome).  WDTV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officers with the Transportation Division are launching the 72-hour International Roadcheck today on I-68 near Coopers Rock. They will follow a 37-step procedure to check vehicle and driver records until Thursday.  WDTV

HEALTH NEWS

  • During National Hospital Week from May 10-16, the West Virginia Hospital Association highlighted challenges like workforce shortages and fewer patients in small communities. The group warned that new changes in Medicaid may risk coverage for 30,000 to 50,000 people (adding pressure to rural hospitals).  West Virginia Public Broadcasting
  • Researchers in the Neuromechanics and Engineering Lab at WVU School of Medicine are developing prosthetic technology using machine learning and virtual reality to help amputees walk and regain sensation+ Associate Professor Sergiy Yakovenko leads a team testing systems to boost mobility.  West Virginia University
  • Hosted by the School of Pharmacy Kappa Psi Beta Eta at the Student Rec Center, the Reach Out and Read 5K was kicked off by the Mountaineer mascot and collected 90 books for pediatric patients while health students engaged local youth to promote healthy habits — fueling early literacy.  West Virginia University
  • HealthNet Aeromedical Services celebrated its 40th anniversary on Monday at its Morgantown base, marking a milestone with over 130,000 patients cared for statewide. Anniversary events will continue at each base with local EMS and hospital staff joining the celebrations.  WDTV

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • WVU Hospitals is planning to acquire the former Monongalia County Health Department property - the purchase is nearing finalization and will expand local care options in Morgantown.  MetroNews

SPORTS NEWS

  • The AFCA backed a 24-team College Football Playoff proposal—which could benefit WVU as it seeks a top-25 spot—though the Big Ten and SEC must approve the plan before any changes go into effect. Athletic director Wren Baker warned added games may stress student athletes.  The Dominion Post
  • The Mountaineers, ranked ninth nationally, have won seven straight games and now prepare to host TCU for an important three-game series, with hopes for a Big 12 title and a regional appearance. Coach Sabins stresses playing clean baseball + staying present for every game.  MetroNews
