  • Morgantown residents can join the nation's largest one-day food drive today as USPS carriers collect nonperishable items to support local food pantries. Volunteers advise using plastic bags (not trash bags) to avoid issues if it rains.  MetroNews

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ten WVU Cyber students took part in the Locked Shields cyber exercise from April 18 to 24, where teams defended mock power grids and phone systems. The event let them use classroom skills + Koh Onishi earned a coin for his standout work.  West Virginia University
  • The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission and CTCS invite campuses to apply for up to $10,000 in 'From Learning to Earning' grants to boost open educational resources and workforce programs. Proposals are due by May 22 with funding beginning June 1 during summer 2026 — check guidelines for details.  West Virginia University
  • WVU Hub refreshed its website and moved all financial aid content to its new platform; users of financial aid or billing sites should update WVU Hub links (covering scholarship, grant, FAFSA, and work-study details) to help students find the right information.  West Virginia University
  • Graduating students will attend GradFest on Wednesday, May 13 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on campus Downtown, where they can enjoy giveaways, special guests, free photos at Woodburn Circle + more.  West Virginia University

HEALTH NEWS

  • West Virginia officials announced a $28.56M investment (through the federal Rural Health Transformation Program) to expand the health care workforce and improve access to rural services, with the funding set to support ongoing efforts statewide.  WV News
  • Yesterday, UHC signed four medical students to its inaugural Family Medicine Residency Rural Scholars Program on Friday afternoon in Bridgeport; the new program aims to strengthen local family medicine by training future doctors + addressing community healthcare needs.  WV News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former WVU women's basketball guard Jordan Harrison earned a spot on the Portland Fire’s 13-woman roster and will debut today at 9 p.m. against the Chicago Sky. She impressed during college play and preseason camp with her defense & quick decision-making.  The Dominion Post
  • University High won its first-ever OVAC 5A softball championship on Thursday in Wheeling when Olivia Masoner hit a grand slam to lift the Hawks to a 5-1 win over John Marshall. Coach Mindy Parks said the 20-5 team now prepares for the AAA Region I tournament.  The Dominion Post
  • Andre Phillip, a three-star quarterback from Spring, Texas, committed to the Mountaineers for the class of 2027. He picks WVU over Iowa State, Army, UTEP & Navy and will complete his official visit from June 5-7.  The Dominion Post
  • WVU Athletics announced plans for a new West Tower at Milan Puskar Stadium – the $156 million upgrade will add premium fan and broadcast seating, with construction starting after the fall season and completing ahead of the 2028 season. Barton Malow and Morgantown-based March-Westin are set to manage the project.  The Dominion Post
