BUSINESS NEWS

  • WVU Extension researcher Doolarie 'Dee' Singh-Knights is working with national experts & USDA support to create guidelines that will help small farms add agritourism safely to their business models. The multi-year project will develop a curriculum, train educators, and test the guidelines with farmers to address safety and liability concerns.  WVU Today

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The West Virginia Department of Education announced Thursday that the state ranked fourth in the nation for enrolling 4-year-olds in preschool with 13,864 children enrolled in free Universal Pre-K programs across all 55 counties — some programs also serve 3-year-olds. This commitment to early education has improved preschool participation from the prior year.  WDTV
  • Three North Central West Virginia organizations will receive literacy grants from Dollar General Literacy Foundation — the Monongalia County Literacy Volunteers will get $4,000, the Randolph County Schools-Mobile Feed and Read Program will receive $3,000, and the Upshur County Public Library will get $1,500. The grants, one of 17 awards totaling over $65,000, will support new or expanded literacy programs near Dollar General locations.  WDTV

  • Morgantown Mayor Joe Abu-Ghannam announced that three retaining walls have been designated historic for their ties to WPA and New Deal programs — the Deckers Creek Wall, the Eighth Street Stone Retaining Walls, and the Richwood Avenue Wall.  The Dominion Post
  • WVU Police shared bicycle safety tips for National Bike Month to help riders travel safely around campus and Morgantown. They urged bicyclists to wear helmets, ride with traffic, use designated bike lanes, lock their bikes with a U-lock, and attach a tracking device + register their bicycles to improve recovery if stolen.  West Virginia University
  • The Morgantown Police Department welcomed new K-9 officer Edo, a one-year-old Dutch Shepherd who will spend the summer training in tracking and narcotics detection. Edo, trained by Shallow Creek Kennels in Pennsylvania, is paired with Patrol Officer First Class Marlee France — the department expects their skills to boost local safety.  WDTV

SPORTS NEWS

  • The West Virginia University golf team has been invited to compete in the GOLFWEEK National Golf Invitational Championship from May 16—18 at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Arizona. Coach Sean Covich said the event will give players another chance to win a postseason championship and will serve as a springboard for next season.  West Virginia University
  • West Virginia University is now selling women’s basketball season tickets and renewals for the 2025-26 season with a renewal deadline of July 25. Season ticket holders can log in online for renewal statements and will get digital parking passes for conference games while new tickets are available by phone and at the ticket office.  West Virginia University
  • The University baseball team rallied from a 5 to 0 deficit to beat Preston 9 to 8 and then won 3 to 0 against East Fairmont at Shilling Field yesterday. They now travel to Bridgeport today and will play a road doubleheader at Martinsburg on Friday & finish the season at home against Fairmont Senior at 5:30 p.m.  The Dominion Post
