COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive celebrates its 34th anniversary Saturday, May 9 when local letter carriers will collect non-perishable food donations from mailboxes to support local food pantries in need. Residents are invited to participate by placing their donations for pickup.  WDTV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • State data shows that unemployment rates fell in all 55 counties from February to March. Clay County saw the largest drop of 3.3 percent (its rate remains 7.3), and the overall state rate eased to 4.5 percent.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Four WVU students have won NSF Graduate Research Fellowships to support advanced research in science and engineering. Daniel Campa from Morgantown and three peers will get a three-year stipend plus an education allowance to boost their studies.  WV News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City Council has approved a new pedestrian bridge over Deckers Creek in lower Greenmont + a Richwood Avenue wall restoration + three neighborhood grant projects through the MOSAIC plan. The bridge will finish 160 days after signing and the wall fix must be completed by June 30.  The Dominion Post
  • West Virginia Attorney General warns residents of scams (120 complaints in April) including Medicare scams, phishing, and robocalls, urging caution statewide.  WV News
  • WVU Hospitals submitted a $6M bid to buy the MCHD property near Ruby Memorial Hospital to expand its Evansdale campus; if approved next week, the county will lease the site until MCHD moves in July.  MetroNews

HEALTH NEWS

  • The new Stretch Zone opened earlier this year at 400 Fort Pierpont Drive, Suite 1009 to help locals improve mobility with 30-minute assisted stretching sessions that ease muscle tension while expanding range of motion. Walk-ins are welcome and the first session is free.  Morgantown Magazine
  • The West Virginia Poison Center warns families about safety risks linked to squishy toys, noting that irritation and ingestion hazards may occur. The advisory advises parents to inspect toys carefully before use.  WV News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Morgantown High School's boys lacrosse team won 17-5 over Fairmont Senior on Wednesday night at Pony Lewis Field in the state quarterfinals and will face Martinsburg in the semifinals (with key players logging hat tricks) once the schedule is set.  The Dominion Post
  • Construction is underway on the new Mountaineer Bike Yard at Mylan Park. The facility approved by USA BMX will feature BMX tracks, pump tracks, jump lines + a mountain bike skills loop along with new support structures to bring riders of all levels together.  WDTV
  • Officials are constructing the new Mountaineer Bike Park at Mylan Park near Morgantown to offer a pump track and skills loop (designed for all abilities) alongside a venue for national events; work continues through this biking season with planned completion by December and a full opening by March.  MetroNews
  • WVU golf earned an NCAA berth as a No. 9 seed in the Marana Regional in Arizona following Wednesday’s announcement – they will compete May 18 – 20 and, if they win, advance to the NCAA Golf Championships beginning May 28.  The Dominion Post
  • No. 15 WVU baseball swept Marshall and is on a four-game win streak ahead of its toughest test as they face No. 7 Kansas today at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.  The Dominion Post
