EDUCATION NEWS

  • Marshall University’s Advanced Manufacturing Center and the state education department have partnered on a pre-apprenticeship program that will give 2,000 high school students hands-on training in trades such as welding, robotics, and aviation maintenance—designed to build local industry skills and increase workforce participation. The program is funded by a $7.1 million federal grant and is expected to open new career pathways for students.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting
  • Seven members of the WVU Soils Team competed at the National Collegiate Soils Contest in Stevens Point where 199 participants from 27 schools gathered; the team finished 8th overall and JosiLee Scott won the individual contest—her first win since 2016—by beating 105 competitors.  West Virginia University
  • West Virginia students earned top honors in the national Stock Market Game in the SIFMA Foundation’s Spring 2025 and Year-Long competitions—teams from across the state showed strong financial skills.  WV News

HEALTH NEWS

  • WVU Cancer Institute raised $950,000 at its spring gala at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs — over 360 people attended the event. The institute now seeks national designation to grow its cancer research efforts.  West Virginia University

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former West Virginia guard Erik Stevenson will return to play for Best Virginia in the 2025 TBT, joining teammate Kedrian Johnson after a one-year break. He played in the NBA G League last two seasons and the team will host a TBT regional at the Charleston Coliseum from July 18-22.  MetroNews
  • The No. 12 West Virginia University baseball team hit the road for the Backyard Brawl in Pittsburgh yesterday (first pitch was at 6 p.m.). The Mountaineers improved their 39-7 record after winning two of three games against Texas Tech over the weekend.  West Virginia University
  • WVSSAC and Chick-fil-A owner-operators extended their partnership to support West Virginia high school sports by sponsoring championships at Charleston Coliseum + Ona. They also support a leadership training program that holds a summit each September where more than 1,200 youth have participated since 2022.  MetroNews
  • West Virginia University released the volleyball team's 2025 nonconference schedule Tuesday afternoon, showing participation in four tournaments and three home matches inside the WVU Coliseum for the West Virginia Invitational. The schedule shows the team will begin play at the Quest for the Crown tournament on Aug. 29-30 and face several opponents in future events + all dates and times remain subject to change.  West Virginia University
