EDUCATION NEWS

  • Morgantown High School won the state Department Academic Showdown for the fourth consecutive year on Friday at the Culture Center in Charleston, beating Huntington High by one point and with team captain Lucille Dahle praising their academic advisors and coaches.  MetroNews
  • Bryce Cohen has been named the new editor-in-chief of The DA, WVU's student-run newsroom, where he plans to boost multimedia reporting (expanding digital content to reach more readers) and mentor next-generation journalists. He also prepares for an internship with the New York Post’s sports video team.  The Daily Athenaeum
  • REACH Student Success led 17 WVU students on a spring break trip to Costa Rica where they visited San Jose and Quepos and volunteered on turtle studies (collecting biometric data) and a mangrove reforestation project. The program is expanding affordable study abroad opportunities for first-generation students with plans for next year’s trip.  West Virginia University
  • The WVU Bookstore launches its First Day Complete program on July 6 for Fall 2026 and urges faculty to submit course materials by April 1 so students know textbook costs.   • WVU graduates celebrated their achievements today while reflecting on cherished campus moments (from stadium cheers to quiet times on E.   • WVU is launching a search for its next vice president for research, with community input sought through a survey and a Zoom forum on May 11 (10-11 a.m.).   • At 7:45 a.m., Mountaineer Middle School went on Code Yellow after reports of a person carrying visible weapons, but deputies confirmed the individual was a hunter returning from turkey hunting and that no one was in danger.  The Dominion Post

HEALTH NEWS

  • State officials launched Stroke Smart West Virginia today to boost stroke awareness, early recognition, and emergency response statewide.  WV News
  • At Nemacolin Resort, more than 400 donors helped the WVU Cancer Institute Annual Gala raise a record $1.176 million to support cancer patient care, research, education, and outreach programs. A Fund the Mission drive also raised over $278,000 to purchase advanced scalp-cooling for 20 locations.  WDTV

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Lit Pot Korean BBQ + Hot Pot is now open at Suncrest Towne Centre. Guests can choose from nearly 100 ingredients to grill and simmer their meals at communal or private tables while a fee applies for unfinished portions.  Morgantown Magazine

SPORTS NEWS

  • WVU football secured a commitment from wide receiver Jacobi Pasley for the 2027 class. The Hinesville, Georgia native and Bradwell Institute player posted 25 catches, 430 yards and six touchdowns as a junior (with 688 all-purpose yards) to boost the Mountaineers' speed.  The Dominion Post
  • University High boys’ tennis team (the Hawks) finished the season 13 to 0 and will play in the Region I team and individual finals on May 4, 5, 7, and 8. They will then compete in the state tournament in Charleston from May 14 to 16.  The Dominion Post
