ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Wednesday evening, a Pennsylvania driver died and three others were injured when her car crossed the centerline—striking a southbound motorcycle and a truck on U.S. Route 119 near Morgantown.  MetroNews

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hope Gas filed a proposal with the Public Service Commission this week to raise base rates by $21.10 to $33.74 based on customer history—its first base rate case since 2020 that includes a two-year pilot discount for low-income households, with the commission set to review the request for 300 days and new rates taking effect on Feb. 25.   The Dominion Post

CULTURE NEWS

  • Students from the School of Art and Design will sell nearly 1,000 handmade pottery and small ceramic sculptures at the Canady Creative Arts Center on May 3 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Proceeds will support visiting artists, club activities and research projects including a ceramics study abroad program.  West Virginia University

EDUCATION NEWS

  • WVU’s Game Design and Interactive Media Program lets students build games from day one and learn skills for a fast-evolving industry—teaching assistant professor Heather Cole said the program helps them turn play into storytelling and problem-solving. The hands-on approach prepares students for real-world careers in creative technologies.  West Virginia University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City residents voted Tuesday, April 29th, to uphold a camping ban that adds up to 30 days in jail and fines from $200 to $500 while requiring the city to offer shelter—although available beds are limited, the measure proposed by Ward 3 council member Louise Weezy Michael will be enforced early June after canvassing completes on May 5th.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting
  • Some workers have returned to the NIOSH facility in Morgantown, but Capito said layoffs will still occur in June—many employees will lose their jobs then.  WV News

HEALTH NEWS

  • During Mental Health Awareness Month, a health expert said many children in West Virginia show signs of anxiety and depression, with about one in four teens reporting behavior problems and over 60,000 children affected; parents are urged to watch for changes in eating and sleeping habits and help kids feel safe to talk about their feelings.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Morgantown High softball team upset top-seeded Steubenville on Wednesday with a 9-3 win and will face the Patriots at 5 p.m. today to defend their OVAC 5A title—University High lost 5-1 to Parkersburg South in the semifinal game.  The Dominion Post
  • On Wednesday at John Marshall courts, girls doubles matches in the OVAC tennis tournament saw Morgantown teams win two doubles titles as the Mohigans led with victories that gave Morgantown 10 points—two more than Wheeling Park and University. The event concluded on Thursday with girls singles play that featured defending champions from University and Linsly.  The Dominion Post
  • Seedings and schedules are set for the WVSSAC H.S. Softball Sectional Tournaments with double-elimination play set to begin Monday, May 5 and run through Saturday, May 17. Sectional champions will advance to best-of-three regional play starting Monday, May 19—final schedules may be updated.  MetroNews
