CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Francisco Ortiz (50) was sentenced to three years in federal prison for bank fraud after he diverted more than $650,000 from a Morgantown medical practice for personal use and must pay $692,176.19 in restitution following an FBI investigation. WDTV
- ➤ William Kenneth Frame, 38, of Birch River was arrested Monday in Nicholas County after he allegedly fired his gun during an argument outside a home and then entered to sexually assault a woman — he is now held at Central Regional Jail on $50,000 bail. MetroNews
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Today, WVU confirmed the reversal of nine student SEVIS record terminations at its Morgantown campus that occurred on April 15 based on a criminal records check. The reversals followed an April 24 lawsuit by the ACLU on behalf of a Pakistani student—whose record was restored on April 25—and the university said it is working with affected students. - ➤ Two WVU researchers—Camila Romero from Morgantown and Christopher Smith from Point Pleasant—were selected as NSF Graduate Research Fellows to support their STEM studies. Romero will soon begin a doctorate in psychology while Smith will continue his work in biomedical engineering, both benefiting from WVU’s ASPIRE Office support. WVU Today

- ➤ Senator Shelley Moore Capito said on Tuesday morning that some NIOSH workers will return to the Morgantown facility this week to resume coal miner and firefighter safety functions temporarily — she is also working with HHS to permanently restore these programs following earlier layoffs. WDTV
