ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Apr. 27, a cleaning operation at the Catalyst Refinery near Nitro released hydrogen sulfide gas that quickly killed two workers, and Dr. Christopher Martin from West Virginia University said the incident underscores the need for stricter safety standards.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting

CULTURE NEWS

  • Stepping Stones held its annual arts festival Tuesday in Morgantown, where over 300 children with disabilities enjoyed activities like tie dye, music, and pottery, supported by more than 100 volunteers and marking nearly 30 years of community tradition.  WDTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jonathan 'Tucker' Bennett, a WVU med student (supported by private scholarships), will graduate in May after easing financial stress and fueling his mission to practice emergency medicine to help local families; he plans to begin his residency at Eastern Virginia Medical School and later serve rural areas.  WVU Today
  • West Virginia Spacetrek will offer a free aerospace STEM program for girls soon in Morgantown. The program aims to inspire interest in aerospace careers.  WDTV
  • The WVU Hub will help students navigate new federal Direct Loan rules (effective July 1) under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, with unchanged options for undergraduates and revised guidelines for graduate and parent PLUS loans.  West Virginia University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The West Virginia Department of Human Services will provide summer EBT benefits from June 1–Aug. 20 to eligible households for grocery purchases when school meals are unavailable; most will be automatically enrolled beginning the week of May 25, while others must apply by May 15.  WDTV
  • Secretary of State Kris Warner announced at Tuesday’s conference that the Office of Entrepreneurship will open in July in Morgantown (the new office will help local business owners overcome obstacles by streamlining government and private support).  WDTV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Governor Morrisey today announced nearly $29 million in federal funding to boost rural healthcare through three programs (Mountain State Care Force, HealthTech Appalachia, and the Connected Care Grid). Eligible groups will soon be able to apply for grants aimed at training healthcare workers, expanding care, and strengthening data systems.  WDTV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Morgantown's Mohigans rallied on Tuesday night at Dale Miller Field, scoring 7 unanswered runs to win 10 to 5 against Robert C. Byrd. The team overcame coach and player ejections with timely hits and aggressive base-running.  MetroNews
  • Last night, the Mohigans beat Wheeling Park 10-1 at Dale Miller Field at Mylan Park to advance in the OVAC playoffs (they will face Steubenville for the championship later this week).  The Dominion Post
