Good morning, Morgantown. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 25th of April.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today at the 3rd floor atrium of Brooks Hall from 9 to 11 a.m., 20 undergraduate students from the WVU Center for Resilient Communities will present action research developed with local organizations — covering topics such as community economic development, environmental justice and food system transformation — to share new insights with the university community.  West Virginia University
  • WVU faculty remembered Loulie Canady, a 93-year-old supporter of the College of Creative Arts and Media who died on March 8. Her legacy includes creating a scholarship and supporting the Canady Creative Arts Center—efforts that helped many students pursue creative learning.  The Daily Athenaeum
  • The School of Theatre and Dance is hosting a costume shop tag sale tomorrow, April 26, at the Douglas O. Blaney Lobby of the Canady Creative Arts Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The sale will offer costume pieces, patterns, accessories and fabrics — including transforming dresses from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, Rapunzel’s wig set from Into the Woods and choir robes from 9 to 5 — and only cash and checks will be accepted.  West Virginia University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Coal miner Harry Wiley from Kanawha County filed a lawsuit on April 7 against HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. saying the April 1 layoffs at the Morgantown NIOSH facility put miners’ health at risk — he seeks the restoration of the facility and its staff.  The Daily Athenaeum
  • Governor Patrick Morrisey signed Lauren’s Law Thursday afternoon in Morgantown to increase penalties for fentanyl-related crimes and to send a stern message to drug dealers—aiming to target all top-tier drug offenses. Named after WVU graduate Lauren Cole who died from unknowingly ingesting fentanyl, the law amends the state criminal code with new mandatory prison sentences for serious drug-related crimes.  WDTV
