BUSINESS NEWS

  • WVU welcomed Huntington Bank as its campus banking partner, offering waived fees on checking accounts and lower closing costs for students, employees and alumni while providing on-campus ATMs, a staffed office and a $250,000 scholarship contribution; an information table will be set up outside Mountainlair on April 27.  West Virginia University

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Melissa L. Simpson has been named the new vice president and CFO/treasurer at the WVU Foundation effective July 1. She will start as CFO-elect on May 1 (to ensure a smooth transition) and replace Mike Augustine (retiring June 30).  WVU Today
  • Suncrest Elementary held a ceremony to honor 40 military families in recognition of Month of the Military Child, with all 570 students waving flags and walking a red carpet to mark the event (a Purple Star School celebration).  WDTV
  • WVU named three faculty as the 2025-26 Benedum Distinguished Scholars for notable work in biosciences, tech, and social sciences; each will receive a $5,000 honorarium and be honored at a Blaney House awards reception in April plus the event spotlights exceptional academic achievement.  West Virginia University
  • The Center for Community Engagement is offering a series of 20-minute Zoom mini-workshops for faculty to learn community-engaged practices. The sessions start today at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., with additional workshops on Wednesday focusing on practical teaching strategies.  West Virginia University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A brief cold snap is predicted to threaten early spring crops in north central West Virginia. Experts warn that the freeze may weaken blossoms and finish them off, potentially impacting local farms.  WV News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Morgantown Utility Board is expanding the Cheat Lake Wastewater Treatment Plant, with the project 48% complete and on schedule for final completion on Aug. 31, 2027. The upgrade will boost capacity to 1.75 million gallons per day and use advanced ultraviolet disinfection (improving water quality and odor control).  The Dominion Post

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Mental Health Monday feature focused on teen mental health shared advice from local experts and outlined new support programs for students and families yesterday in Morgantown — the piece detailed actionable steps to help teens cope with stress.  WDTV
  • A Morgantown veterinary team performed emergency surgery on a Pennsylvania eagle chick (USS11) at the Avian Conservation Center of Appalachia after it swallowed a fishhook Saturday. The bird is recovering well and may return to its nest in a couple of weeks if all goes as planned.  The Dominion Post

SPORTS NEWS

  • John Marshall won 2-1 against the Mohigans today when Masyn Inclan's RBI double in the sixth inning gave the Monarchs the lead (improving their record to 17-3) while sophomore pitcher Lily Dijkstra retired the final batters to finish a complete game win.  MetroNews
  • WVU baseball won two out of three games against Houston and is set to face Pitt in the Backyard Brawl today at Kendrick Family Ballpark (6:30 p.m. with ESPN+ coverage), although Gavin Kelly is limited by a swollen wrist while Maxx Yehl remains sidelined.  The Dominion Post
