EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ WVU's College of Creative Arts and Media announced the 2025 winners of its Mentored Research and Creative Activity awards with prizes for undergraduate, graduate, and collaborative projects—students and faculty received funds for professional development. Winners include Isaac McCarthy, Ava Furlow, Clayton Heath, Kendyl Bostic, Jenna Stewart and colleagues. West Virginia University
- ➤ The Student Employee Appreciation Committee recognized Chayce Hill, a junior chemical engineering major working at West Virginia Water Research Institute, and Nishat Alam, a doctoral student in industrial engineering serving as a research assistant, as the Undergraduate and Graduate Student Employee of the Year. The awards were announced in a virtual ceremony featuring remarks from University leaders and supervisors—Alam also earned runner-up honors in a regional student employment competition. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Chief Gary Freshour of the Morgantown Fire Department said he is working to mend ties with city hall—addressing disputes over holiday pay and a vote of no confidence—during his short tenure. City council members said they support his effort and look forward to improved cooperation. The Dominion Post
- ➤ Incoming city manager Jamie Miller will begin work by June 23 with a base salary of $175,000 and relocation support along with allowances for vehicle and phone expenses—approved unanimously by City Council in a brief special session. The contract requires her primary residence to be in Morgantown to help meet local residency rules. The Dominion Post
- ➤ Morgantown City Council approved $10.1 million in state and federal funds for phase four of the Municipal Airport runway extension—extending the runway by 1,001 feet—while bids for phase five, which include building a retaining wall and an embankment with costs between $6.7 million and $10.7 million, opened Thursday. Officials expect the FAA to confirm additional funding this fall, and the overall $62 million project, under construction since March 2021, will finish between 2028 and 2030. The Dominion Post

- ➤ After playing on April 17th, the No. 24 WVU baseball team hosts Cincinnati today at Kendrick Family Ballpark with first pitch at 6:30 p.m. The series finishes on Saturday at 2 p.m.+ dog owners at the Saturday game must keep pets leashed and sign a waiver for Bark at the Park. - ➤ The West Virginia University rowing team is hosting its annual Gold and Blue Regatta today in Morgantown, beginning at 11 a.m. on a 500m segment of the Monongahela River from Westover Bridge to the WVU Boathouse; fans may join the event at a marketing table near 40 Donley Street and receive free donuts for the first 50 visitors—bringing local support to our rowers. - ➤ The Big 12 Conference released the 2025 women’s soccer schedule with the Mountaineers set to play six home games at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium—teams like Arizona State, Houston, Utah, and BYU will face them for the first time. West Virginia will start conference play on Sept. 18 and finish with a championship from Nov. 3 to Nov. 8 while its nonconference schedule is pending. West Virginia University
- ➤ Cade Kincaid, a junior accounting major from Fayetteville, became the 71st Mountaineer at the Passing of the Rifle Ceremony on March 8 at the Coliseum.
