COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Morgantown is hosting Spring Cleanup Day on April 25 from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will meet on Chancery Row next to the Monongalia County Courthouse to receive a safety briefing before working at various downtown locations (litter pick-up, mowing medians, and clearing brush).  West Virginia University
  • Make-A-Wish Greater Pennsylvania and West Virginia is recruiting volunteers in West Virginia to join local wish teams + support children with critical illnesses. Interested candidates should contact the organization to learn more.  WV News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Early bird registration for Bridging Innovation Week ends April 17; the free event hosted by West Virginia Entrepreneurship Ecosystem will take place from April 27-29 with campus tours, networking, panels & live pitch competitions in Morgantown.  West Virginia University
  • Gray Media said DISH removed WDTV and WVFX from its service over a month ago after offering extensions during severe weather and major events (including the Super Bowl and Winter Olympics) and is still waiting on a new agreement, leaving the channels available only on other providers.  WDTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students will present innovative research on speech, language and hearing disorders at the HSC Pylons from 1 to 4 p.m. April 24 while community members can see how local work is making strides in understanding these fields.  West Virginia University
  • Petex extended its partnership with WVU by gifting a software suite valued at more than $6.5 million to support research and teaching in the geology and petroleum and natural gas engineering programs. This support helps students gain hands-on experience with industry-leading modeling tools.  WVU Today
  • State Treasurer Larry Pack said 20,000 students have signed up for the Hope Scholarship for the 2026-27 school year with 8,000 new enrollees and 12,000 returning, and sign-ups remain open until June 15 (private and homeschoolers are now eligible).  MetroNews

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The West Virginia Water Research Institute partners with Friends of Deckers Creek and BOPARC to seek grant funding for a fecal coliform abatement project at Stanley’s Spot Dog Park on Deckers Creek. BOPARC consent is expected today, with grant applied for by May 1 and construction starting in spring 2028.  The Dominion Post

HEALTH NEWS

  • Lyme disease cases have increased from 300 in 2016 to over 3,000 in 2023 as milder winters & more outdoor activities raise tick risks, according to UPMC GoHealth doctor Kane Maiers. Residents are advised to check for ticks promptly after spending time outside to lower the chance of tick-borne illnesses.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • The Tea Shoppe offers community tea events, serving over 250 teas and specialty treats at its Seneca Center location (709 Beechurst Ave. #23). It will host a Kentucky Derby Tea Party on April 30 and a Princess Tea with Cinderella event on May 30.  The Daily Athenaeum
  • West Virginia’s spring turkey season will start April 20 and run until May 24 with a special youth hunt this weekend; officials say it supports over 7,400 jobs + generates more than $850 million in spending across 55 counties.  WDTV

SPORTS NEWS

  • West Virginia basketball coach Ross Hodge added former Georgia Tech center transfer Mouhamed Sylla to boost team depth next season. The 6-foot-10 center, coming off a freshman season and an ankle injury, averaged 9.6 points and 7.2 rebounds (and is expected to strengthen frontcourt defense).  The Dominion Post
  • WVU football coach West revamped the corner room by recruiting taller transfer players (including Diagne from Georgia State) to better match Big 12 offenses. The new group is learning the playbook as they prepare for improved performance this fall.  The Dominion Post
  • Senior Max Cash delivered a walk-off two-run homerun in the bottom of the seventh on Monday at Shilling Field to give University High a 6-5 win over Wheeling Park — it is the team's second victory this season, and they will face their Morgantown rival on Wednesday.  The Dominion Post
  • The latest episode (710) of 3 Guys Before The Game has hosts Brad Howe, Hoppy Kercheval, and Tony Caridi discussing WVU sports, revealing new men's and women's basketball roster changes and providing updates on football and baseball ahead of the season.  MetroNews
