COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Center for Community Engagement Excellence in Community Engagement Awards honored people who made a big impact in learning and helping the community. Winners include faculty Geah Pressgrove, staff Frank Hatten, graduate student Danielle Stoneberg, undergraduate student Genavieve Vanaman, and others who showed the Mountaineer Core Values — Service, Curiosity, Respect, Accountability and Appreciation.  West Virginia University
  • WVU invites community members to join spring head coaches and student-athletes for a luncheon on May 14 at Milan Puskar Stadium from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Lunch and non-alcoholic beverages will be served — proceeds will benefit the Mountaineer Scholarship Fund.  West Virginia University

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Morgantown-based Mountaineer Area Robotics team 2614, made up of 41 students from five counties, returned from the Smoky Mountains Regional competition after a strong performance—official rank details were not released.  WV News
  • Yesterday, WVU Medicine cut the ribbon on its new Center for Nursing Education in Morgantown—an advanced facility of 37,000 square feet built from a former plant that now hosts simulation labs, virtual reality rooms and student amenities. The center is designed to serve up to 200 students with a tuitionless option in exchange for a three-year work commitment with WVU Medicine to help ease the nursing shortage.  The Dominion Post
  • At WVU College of Law on April 4, a portrait of Judge Robert B. King was unveiled as his sister Mary Ellen Mazey surprised the crowd by announcing the creation of two scholarships to honor his legal legacy—these awards will support WVU law and undergraduate students from West Virginia.  WVU Today

HEALTH NEWS

  • The CDC shut down its coal worker health unit that helped miners get free screenings and treatment, putting 25 workers on leave on April 1. Local lawyer Sam Petsonk filed a class-action lawsuit late Monday to reinstate the program — which had reduced Black Lung Disease among miners.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting

SPORTS NEWS

  • Cam Danser, a former Morgantown High School star, played in 27 games with 20 starts at WVU Tech as he averaged 9.7 points and emerged as a key outside shooter. He has now entered the transfer portal and will seek a Power 5 opportunity — a move that honors his hometown roots.  The Dominion Post
  • Griffin Kirn, a left-handed pitcher from Division II at Quincy, will start at 7:30 p.m. today when the Mountaineers play Houston in Big 12 action. He struck out 14 in his best game last week and works hard—head coach Steve Sabins said his drive makes him a key player as WVU chases a conference title.  The Dominion Post
