CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Today, the West Virginia Mountaineer Short Film Festival starts at 6 p.m. at the WVU Planetarium with nearly 100 videos, animations + digital artworks from regional and global creators and WVU students. The festival moves to the Canady Creative Arts Center for film screenings and interactive sessions through Sunday and is free to attend. West Virginia University
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ West Virginia University honored faculty Thomas Devine and Vicki Sealey for their work with the 2025 WVU Foundation Awards for Outstanding Teaching — each will receive a $5,000 grant and be celebrated at Blaney House on April 16. West Virginia University
- ➤ WVU will replace its online login system with Okta effective June 1 to improve security and lower costs—students and staff must add a non-WVU email for recovery by May 30 while Okta Verify will replace Duo Mobile when the transition is complete around Oct. 1. The Daily Athenaeum
- ➤ Starting with the Spring 2026 term, all WVU students will use the new MyWVU Portal for a single application process. The system will launch in early August and staff will be trained from May to early September while the old TargetX application is decommissioned in late August—licensed users will retain access through December. - ➤ WVU Health Sciences chancellor Clay Marsh named Sarah C. Woodrum as dean for the School of Public Health effective April 8—interim dean Erik L. Carlton stepped down on April 7 and will end his administrative duties on July 1 as he focuses on research and teaching. West Virginia University
- ➤ The Regional Research Institute and Department of Economics will co-host a seminar on April 11 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Reynolds Hall Room 5201—Adam Scavette, an economic advisor at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, will present new research on reversing the natural resource curse by studying the effects of coal mine closures on poverty in Appalachia. - ➤ Morgantown and county officials addressed a Tuesday report from TRIP that found local roads rated worse than those in other urban areas—officials noted new transportation leadership has spurred efforts to improve the conditions. The city is evaluating its streets and plans to release a detailed report soon. The Dominion Post
- ➤ Former NIOSH employees at the Morgantown facility received layoff notices on April 1 that put them on administrative leave with pay until June 2—researchers warn that ending work on respiratory safety could put lives at risk. Many workers gathered their belongings amid confusion as union representatives noted a lack of clear next steps. The Daily Athenaeum
