CULTURE NEWS

  • The West Virginia University School of Art and Design’s Digital Art and Animation program will host the 2025 West Virginia Mountaineer Short Film Festival in Morgantown from April 10 to 13 — the event will feature international short films along with works by WVU students and regional filmmakers — and all screenings are free and open to the public. Screenings begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 10 at the WVU Planetarium and Observatory 360° Dome.  WDTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • WVU Research Week begins today inviting the public to attend discussions on topics like artificial intelligence, nuclear energy and the Holocaust as well as exhibits and a thesis competition — the events will take place online and across campus through April 10.  West Virginia University
  • Graduate Student Appreciation Week began April 7 and will continue through April 11 as the Office of Graduate Education and Life sponsors social and wellness events for graduate and professional students—activities include free professional headshots, workshops, outdoor recreation events and a daily trivia challenge. The WVU community is invited to celebrate the hard work and resilience of these students through class recognition and social media updates.  West Virginia University
  • Edward Brzostek, an associate professor of biology in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences, was named the Benedum Distinguished Scholar for his research on West Virginia forests' response to acid rain — his work on plant-microbe-soil interactions provides key insights for managing carbon removal — and he will receive a $5,000 honorarium at an awards ceremony on April 16 at Blaney House.  West Virginia University
  • A portion of parking lot ST-6 at Blaney House is closed today and on April 10 while other short-term lots on campus offer parking—normal access resumes on April 11.  West Virginia University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Patrick Morrisey signed Senate Bill 458 on Monday, which lets licensed and certified professionals work in West Virginia without extra exams. Industry leaders say the law will attract skilled workers and boost the local economy by easing work in fields such as healthcare (doctors and nurses) and construction.  WDTV
  • On Monday, the West Virginia Humanities Council stopped its statewide grant program because federal cuts reduced funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities.  WV News
  • At its Monday meeting, the House Judiciary Committee advanced Senate Bill 196 (Lauren’s Law) that would increase penalties for selling drugs such as fentanyl, meth, PCP, LSD, cocaine and heroin. Some lawmakers and local residents worry that tougher sentences may limit judicial discretion (and could lead to higher correctional costs) as efforts to reduce overdose deaths continue.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting

SPORTS NEWS

  • West Virginia University running back Clay Ash from Leesburg was named the winner of the 2025 Tommy Nickolich Memorial Award by Blue & Gold News. He earned increased playing time on special teams last season and was recognized for his academic achievements.  West Virginia University
  • On Saturday, the WVU track team won two events at the Dalton Ebanks Invitational at George Mason Stadium in Fairfax as Lily Haught won the women's 400 meters in 55.03 seconds and the relay team of Cate Pickering, Lily Haught, Carlene Temple and Kishay Rowe finished first in 3:46.43. The team will travel to the Bison Outdoor Classic from April 12th to 14th at Christy Mathewson Memorial Stadium in Lewisburg.  West Virginia University
