ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ The West Virginia Chamber of Commerce is urging lawmakers to boost the economy and create more jobs in the session’s final days. Chamber President Steve Roberts warned—citing federal job losses, potential Medicaid changes and a 85,000-job decline in manufacturing over his career—that local workers have already been hurt. - ➤ The NASA IV&V Facility is expanding its STEM outreach to students across West Virginia by offering hands-on science and technology programs. The program will host local events that help students learn about careers in science & engineering. WV News

- ➤ Sen. Capito said that budget talks may change Medicaid by adding work rules and altering the federal cost share that funds over $5 billion in expenses. West Virginia lawmakers say cuts are unlikely now (federal dollars pay for about 80 percent) but experts warn future changes could reduce benefits or enrollment. MetroNews
- ➤ Last week, 185 union workers at Morgantown NIOSH lost their jobs when federal workforce cuts were announced. Secretary Kennedy said that about 20% of the cuts were mistakes and promised a review focusing on worker safety—Senator Capito said the cuts left the office nearly empty while union representatives warned that critical research and safety programs could be hurt in the future. - ➤ On Saturday night, WVU finished its first Big 12 sweep by beating Utah in a doubleheader with scores of 6 to 4 and 14 to 4 while opening its new 8,200 square foot Biomechanics and Performance Center. Coach Steve Sabins said he does not focus on the Ratings Percentage Index—stressing that the team will control what they can—as WVU prepares for 22 more regular season games with series against Penn State, Kansas State and Kansas.
