CRIME NEWS

  • Louis Oswalt, 46, was charged with DUI causing death after he ran a red light on March 18 at the intersection of U.S. Route 50 and State Route 18 in Doddridge County causing a collision that fatally injured Angie Campbell, who died on April 4 at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown—officers reported finding marijuana and prescription pills in his car and set his bail at $100,000.  MetroNews

EDUCATION NEWS

  • West Virginia University set a record when 93.8% of freshmen returned for spring—with a 97% rate in engineering—as noted by Interim Provost Paul Kreider at a Friday Board meeting. The Board approved new Bachelor and Master's degree programs in Applied Artificial Intelligence and relocated the University Police Department to the Chestnut Ridge Research Building—moves aimed at strengthening the school's future.  MetroNews

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Morgantown Traffic Commission has tasked its chair with a study to explore ways to reduce heavy truck traffic downtown and lessen road damage. A project to widen Green Bag Road with an $18.3 million contract is set to continue until late 2027 — the study may guide future efforts to ease truck congestion.  The Dominion Post
  • Lawmakers in West Virginia are working to pass a balanced budget as the legislative session winds down while bills to ban camping statewide and change education policies including teacher pay and school discipline move forward—debates on energy and the coal industry add to the state’s busy lawmaking agenda.   • State Secretaries of Health (DH) and Human Services (DoHS) said in a Thursday evening press release that they are preparing for upcoming federal grant cuts and will ensure that critical services remain available to the public.  WV News

  • On Saturday, the Mountaineers clinched the series with a 6—4 win over Utah in game one of the doubleheader when timely hitting, including a three-run homer by Brodie Kresser, and strong relief from Reese Bassinger drove the win. The team’s winning streak extended to six games after Armani Guzman made a decisive running catch in the ninth.  MetroNews
  • Grant Hussey hit a 432-foot home run in the eighth inning on Friday night that gave WVU a 6-3 win over Utah at Kendrick Family Ballpark — his 41st career home run that extended a school record.  The Dominion Post
  • On Friday evening, Braden Adkins passed the rifle to Cade Kincaid at a ceremony that ended his tenure as the 70th Mountaineer Mascot. Kincaid, a junior accounting major from Fayetteville who was named the 71st Mountaineer during a recent basketball game, said he hopes to inspire others in his new role—continuing the legacy of the mascot.  The Daily Athenaeum
