CRIME NEWS

  • Jonathan Lee Mathis, a Kentucky man, was arrested on Sunday for malicious assault and strangulation near Mont Chateau Road and the Ices Ferry Bridge in Cheat Lake after a witness saw him drag his girlfriend from the back of a SUV—she suffered severe head injuries from a rock attack.  WDTV
  • A Morgantown man facing a state murder charge was acquitted in a separate federal gun case—he remains under the state charge despite the federal decision.  WV News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Javon Small, a senior from WVU Men’s Basketball, declared for the NBA Draft on Instagram Saturday—ending his college career after he averaged 18.6 points per game and earned first-team All-Big 12 honors. He started at East Carolina, played two seasons at Oklahoma State, and was a key player at WVU as he prepares to pursue his professional career.  WDTV
  • West Virginia football coach Rich Rodriguez said he has not named a starting quarterback for the Blue-Gold spring showcase as his six quarterbacks compete for the job. He said he will decide in the summer after extra practices show which player can lead the team on the field—he values on-field play over personality.  The Dominion Post
  • The WVU Mountaineers won a three-game baseball series in Provo against BYU by 19-16 after overcoming a seven-run deficit and rallying with a three-run home run by Jace Rineart in the seventh inning. The team scored 44 runs over the series with Chase Meyer earning his first save and freshman Mac Stiffler securing the win.  The Dominion Post
