Good morning, Morgantown. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 30th of March.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Saturday morning, the Hotsinpiller Foundation brought 16 K9 kits to Bridgeport City Hall to help law enforcement in NCWV detect drugs safely—local officers noted the kits ease training and reduce risks while honoring a legacy of service. The donation supports safer K9 training methods that avoid using dangerous substances.  WDTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Members of the campus community gathered at Oglebay Plaza on Friday to honor Daniel Tripp, a civil engineering sophomore who died on Nov. 28th, with three rings of the USS West Virginia bell and a moment of silence; the ceremony was coordinated by Alpha Phi Omega + the Office of Campus and Community Life and ended with a certificate given to his parents.  The Daily Athenaeum

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Patrick Morrisey announced that the state got a 90-day extension to submit its final proposal for the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment program, known as BEAD. The state will use the extra time to decide how to invest funding in projects like AI hubs—microgrids and data centers.  MetroNews
  • Bridgeport is suing the director of the state economic development office over a TIF district extension that it calls unconstitutional — the change removes the need for city consent and forces Bridgeport to provide extra services without additional tax revenue. The Monongalia County Commission approved hiring Steptoe & Johnson last week to intervene and protect the interests of other TIF districts.  The Dominion Post
  • A House-passed bill will let the state Division of Highways hire private companies to remove snow and ice in Monongalia and Preston counties after unreliable services led to unsafe road conditions. The Senate Finance Committee will review the proposal before the session ends — and its sponsors expect the pilot to improve road safety near major hospitals.  MetroNews

SPORTS NEWS

  • The University girls lacrosse team defended its state title on Friday evening at Baker's Ridge by beating George Washington 19-8 to improve to 5-0. The Hawks built an early lead and dominated the second half even while playing one player short.  The Dominion Post
  • The WVU baseball team evened its series with a 20-6 win against BYU at Miller Park in Provo on Friday. Spencer Barnett and Armani Guzaman led the offense with six hits and seven RBIs as the Mountaineers scored seven runs in the seventh inning and eight in the eighth — their highest Big 12 score since 2018.  The Dominion Post
  • WVU coach Rich Rodriguez—61-year-old coach—said college football must adapt to NFL practices as his team faces challenges from a roster cap drop to 105 players and a spring transfer portal opening April 16th. He warned that without rule changes, coaches risk wasting time training players who may soon leave for better opportunities.  The Dominion Post
  • The 2026 Snyder of Berlin/UTZ Snacks Shootout will take place February 9th—12th, 2026 at West Virginia State University with 36 games scheduled over four days featuring four state champions, three state finalists, additional state semifinalists and qualifiers, and new teams from across the state. Organizers plan to keep games on schedule with a compressed pregame warmup period so teams get new matchups on a neutral court.  MetroNews
  • WVU coaches used their 12th spring practice as a scrimmage on Saturday to evaluate players—Coach Rich Rodriguez said he will review film and hold meetings next week to inform players about potential roster cuts and transfers when the portal opens on April 16.
