EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Work began on the WVU Mountaineer Marching Band's new practice facility — located at Med Fields on Chestnut Ridge Road next to Mountaineer Station — which will host rehearsals, camps and storage in the fall. WDTV
- ➤ Faculty and graduate students are invited to attend the ADVANCE Center writing group today from noon to 2 p.m. in Field Hall, Room 2202 or on Zoom to work on projects such as grant proposals and articles — the Center also has a dissertation group meeting on Friday, March 28 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. — that offers advice and networking for doctoral candidates. - ➤ Faculty, staff, students and community members are invited to join over 400 state and regional leaders at Focus Forward: Long Live West Virginia on April 22 at the Morgantown Marriott at Waterfront Place, where a statewide conference on health, wellness and the future of work will take place. The conference will run from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.—followed by a reception honoring President Gordon Gee from 4:30 to 6 p.m. West Virginia University
- ➤ On March 20, the National Federation of the Blind and its West Virginia branch along with two blind graduate students filed a federal lawsuit against West Virginia University’s Board of Governors, saying the school failed to provide proper course materials and accessible online classes (the suit seeks changes and compensation for the alleged discrimination). - ➤ The Division of Talent and Culture reminded employees that a new application is required each year for the 2025-26 Dependent Education Scholarship, and eligible students must be full-time, degree-seeking undergrads under 26 who are dependent children of WVU and WVU Research Corporation benefits-eligible employees. Applications are due by April 1 for summer—June 1 for fall, and students cannot receive the summer award if they already received scholarships for both the preceding fall and spring. - ➤ The House of Delegates passed HB 2960 by a 50–48 vote on Tuesday to have the Division of Highways establish a two-year pilot program for contracting snow removal on secondary roads in Monongalia and Preston counties—its sponsor citing a fatal accident on Cheat Lake Bridge as a prompt. Senate lawmakers also amended a Holocaust education bill and a pharmacist prescribing act, and both measures advanced to third reading. The Dominion Post
- ➤ University Police shared severe weather tips during Spring Severe Weather Awareness Week to help residents prepare for tornadoes, flash floods and lightning storms. They advised reviewing emergency plans and seeking shelter when needed—tornado drills took place at 11 a.m. on March 25th. West Virginia University
