EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Fourth-year WVU medical students across three campuses learned their residency placements on March 21, marking a key milestone in their careers and joining ticketed celebrations held in Morgantown, Charleston, and Martinsburg for students, families, and faculty. West Virginia University
- ➤ Delegates passed a bill on Friday that would keep cell phones out of classrooms during instructional time and allow for exceptions for students with special needs or medical devices—county boards will develop policies for the 2025-2026 school year as the law now goes to the state Senate. This legislation was introduced on behalf of Governor Patrick Morrisey in his State of the State address. MetroNews

- ➤ State legislators advanced House Bill 2382 which could override Morgantown’s local vote on a camping ban set for April 29. The bill passed the House on March 11 and will be read in the Senate on March 24—if enacted, it will require that an alternate shelter is available before fines or jail time are imposed. SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ In 1945, Normantown High School, which served fewer than 200 students, won the state basketball championship by upsetting larger teams at the old WVU Field House in Morgantown. Betty Jean Cross recalled that the team overcame wartime challenges such as gasoline shortages to secure one-point victories in both the semi-final and final games. MetroNews
- ➤ The West Virginia University track and field team began its 2025 outdoor season on March 21 with the Marty Pushkin Invitational at Mylan Park in Morgantown. They will compete today at the USF Alumni Invitational in Tampa (11 a.m. start). West Virginia University
- ➤ Today at 2:00 p.m., the sixth-seeded West Virginia University women’s basketball team opens its NCAA Tournament run in Chapel Hill against 11th-seeded Columbia. The team practiced with a shortened schedule (splitting prep between different opponents after a two-week break) and coach Mark Kellogg said they must settle quickly to start strong (citing a slow first quarter in past contests). - ➤ Head coach Sean Cleary and graduate student Ceili McCabe from WVU were named the Mid-Atlantic Region Women's Coach and Track Athlete of the Year by the USTFCCCA on Thursday afternoon. McCabe set a facility record in the 3000 meter race at the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 15 with a time of 9:01.18—making her the first woman in program history to win the event while earning her 10th All-America honor.
