COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A month after floods caused three deaths and left many homes damaged in southern West Virginia, local groups and private efforts are gathering funds and supplies for recovery. At a Morgantown benefit concert on March 5 — where organizers raised about $4,000 along with cleaning supplies, water, and food — community members say it could take at least six months for residents to fully recover.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting

CRIME NEWS

  • Two more individuals received federal prison sentences after federal prosecutors linked them to an alleged Philadelphia drug ring that had flooded North Central West Virginia with meth and fentanyl—sentencing follows a lengthy investigation.  WV News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Trey Yates, a fourth-generation dairy farmer at Greenbrier Dairy in Rainelle, said USDA cuts to programs funding schools and food banks now threaten to close his farm and leave 10 employees without work—other West Virginia producers are also facing financial hardship as state officials discuss ways to address a funding shortfall for next school year.  The Dominion Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Morgantown’s Land Reuse and Preservation Agency held a planning session where members asked Public Services Director Rickie Yeager to provide fee data from permits, rental inspections and registration of vacant structures—data that may be used to support its work on unused city properties. Chair Jessica McDonald said the agency will review the numbers before meeting with City Council in early April about transferring nearly two dozen underused parcels.  The Dominion Post
  • Work on Holland Avenue is set to begin in less than one week—starting with repairs on the failing retaining wall along its lower section, and crews will work around the clock for at least 90 days while keeping one lane open for traffic. Blue Gold Development was awarded the $2,958,025 contract, and a final resurfacing by the state is planned once the base layers are in place.  The Dominion Post

SPORTS NEWS

  • Three public high schools from Monongalia County have qualified for the 2025 WVSSAC boys’ basketball tournament—Morgantown and University will tip off this morning in the Class AAAA quarterfinals at the Charleston Coliseum while Clay-Battelle will open the Class A game on Thursday.  The Dominion Post
  • Today, West Virginia will meet James Madison at Kendrick Family Ballpark at 6:30 p.m. due to warm weather—tickets for the originally scheduled game remain valid.  West Virginia University
  • Graduate student Ceili McCabe won the women’s 3,000-meter NCAA Indoor Championship on March 15—breaking the facility record with a 9:01.18 finish—while the rifle team earned its 20th NCAA title when senior Natalie Perrin’s 10.1 final shot gave WVU a one-point victory in Lexington, Kentucky.  West Virginia University
  • West Virginia's sixth-seeded Mountaineers will play either Washington or Columbia on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Chapel Hill, and coach Mark Kellogg said the team—ranked 16th nationally—is preparing for fresh challenges in its third NCAA tournament appearance.  West Virginia University
