  • At the Be the Change Ball, nearly $136K was raised to support Hero’s Haven Child Advocacy Center—79% of the funds are designated for child advocacy services.  WV News

  • WVU Research writer Laura Jackson’s book Deep and Wild: On Mountains, Opossums and Finding Your Way in West Virginia was named Book of the Year by the Writers Conference of Northern Appalachia—she uses humor to show what makes life in West Virginia unique. The debut essay collection is now available wherever books are sold.  West Virginia University

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Division of Campus Engagement and Compliance will host the Mosaic Graduation Celebration at 5 p.m. on May 8 in the Mountainlair — Blue Ballroom to honor graduating students. Graduating students must register by March 31 to participate and can choose a free stole for their regalia.  West Virginia University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, March 17, 2025, the West Virginia Department of Highways worked to patch potholes on Saint Patrick's Day in NCWV areas. Motorists were told to slow down and give patching crews extra space — a safety reminder for those on the road.  WDTV
  • Attorney General J.B. McCuskey launched an investigation into the NCAA tournament selection process after Gov. Patrick Morrisey requested a review when the WVU men's basketball team was left out despite a 19-12 record and 10 conference wins (he aims to uncover potential corruption or backroom deals). McCuskey said his review will help ensure a fair selection process in future tournaments.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting
  • WVU campus safety officer Rick Kelly brings a strong work ethic and a unique background to his role—he began his law enforcement career in Anchorage at age 53, served with the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department after nearly 27 years in the U.S. Air Force, and returned to West Virginia in 2020. The Bruceton Mills native values time with family, dogs, and outdoor sports as he continues to keep the campus safe.  West Virginia University

SPORTS NEWS

  • The West Virginia University women's basketball team earned a No.6 seed in the 2025 NCAA Tournament—its first round game against an 11-seeded opponent is set for Saturday, March 22 at Carmichael Arena in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The second round will be played on Monday, March 24.  West Virginia University
  • Graduate student Ceili McCabe of WVU won the women's 3,000 meters at the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 15 at Virginia Beach Sports Center—she broke the facility record with a time of 9:01.18 and earned her tenth All-America honor. She became the first Mountaineer to win the 3,000 meters at a championship—joining alumna Kate Vermeulen as only the second indoor champion while the team prepares for the outdoor season starting March 21-22.  West Virginia University
  • In Lexington, the West Virginia University rifle team won its 20th NCAA Rifle National Championship title after two days of competition at Memorial Coliseum — a final shot by Natalie Perrin gave them a one-point win over Kentucky — and the team finished with a perfect regular season.  West Virginia University
