COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Center for Community Engagement invites nominations for its annual Excellence in Community Engagement Awards — the awards honor outstanding work in engaged learning and community impact. Nominations must reflect Mountaineer Values including Service, Curiosity, Respect, Accountability, and Appreciation; submissions are due by March 31 with winners announced on April 11.  West Virginia University

CRIME NEWS

  • Michael McHenry, 23, led police on a chase after carjacking a vehicle at gunpoint in Monongalia County and was sentenced to 12 years and 10 months in federal prison for unlawful firearm possession—his co-defendant Garrett DeBerry, 26 from Morgantown pleaded guilty and faces sentencing in May.  WDTV
  • A 25-year-old man named Tafadzwa Chapoto was arrested Wednesday on two counts of indecent exposure after police said he followed women through a Monongalia County apartment complex while nude — he is now in jail with a $10,000 bond.  WDTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The WVU English Department DEI and Social Justice Committee will host a workshop on accessible teaching methods on March 31 at 2 p.m. in Colson Hall Room 130 — the session will count for English 790 credit for graduate teaching assistants.  West Virginia University
  • WVU Libraries has hired three new librarians and archivists to enhance its services. Cypress Payne will work on cataloging and metadata, Kathryn Reagan will arrange and digitize historical materials, and Yiheng Wu will lead data analysis and visualization projects—bringing valuable expertise to the library team.  West Virginia University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • If Congress does not pass a new continuing resolution by midnight Friday, most federal government operations will soon shut down and agencies will delay issuing new contracts and grants—researchers with ongoing awards should see little immediate impact. Officials say that delays in funding and new proposals may extend even after operations resume.  West Virginia University

SPORTS NEWS

  • WVU track and field announced its 2025 outdoor schedule on Wednesday and will host four home meets at the Mylan Park Track & Field Complex + the team will start the season on March 21-22 with split squads heading to Tampa and Morgantown, followed by events in North Carolina, California, Pennsylvania, and culminating with the NCAA Outdoor Championship in June.  West Virginia University
  • The Morgantown High girls’ basketball team will play George Washington on Friday in the Class AAAA state semifinals at the Charleston Coliseum after their 86-54 win in the quarterfinals. Coach John Fowkes said the Mohigans plan to use their size and pressure defense + the game starts at 7:15 p.m. with the winner moving on to Saturday’s championship.  The Dominion Post
  • Morgantown — Sophomore Owen Recker from West Virginia University qualified for the 2025 NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships by finishing fourth on the platform with 634.60 points and 12th on the 3-meter with 662.25 points. He will soon compete in his first NCAA event and is the first male diver to qualify since 2022.  West Virginia University
