ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters investigated a small classroom fire at University High School Monday morning at 6:40 a.m. and quickly extinguished the flames — alarms were reset by 7:15 a.m. as students returned, with officials still investigating the cause.  MetroNews

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A WVU study (from 2024) finds that coal mining and coal-fired power generation generated about $21 billion and supported over 36,000 jobs across West Virginia. The research underscores the sector's role in the state's economy.  WV News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Joshua Hall has been reappointed as Milan Puskar Dean of the John Chambers College of Business and Economics after a comprehensive Spring review praised his leadership and improvements in student retention and job placement. His new five-year term begins July 1 and he plans to expand student opportunities with campus partners.  West Virginia University
  • WVU is launching a campuswide campaign to clarify lactation break policies for staff and students. The new guidelines require supervisors to offer flexible scheduling and private pumping spaces (a measure set by federal law) while also ensuring hourly employees are compensated.  West Virginia University
  • A WVU researcher was recognized for innovative work in quantum mechanics and computing. The award highlights the university’s commitment to advancing scientific research.  WV News
  • Faculty and staff at WVU may submit proposals to nominate a project that honors community engagement in research, teaching and service — submissions are open through March 20.  West Virginia University
  • Faculty and staff are reminded to check in with each other as the semester reaches its midpoint in Morgantown. The Faculty and Staff Assistance Program offers three free appointments for mental wellness check-ins, skills coaching, and recovery referrals (including crisis help).  West Virginia University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Granville Mayor Patty Lewis said Emmett Drive will remain closed at least six more weeks after a rock slide halted travel on Feb. 27 — officials and engineering experts met Monday and expect state input for emergency repairs along the popular shortcut between University Town Centre Drive and Monongahela Boulevard.  The Dominion Post

HEALTH NEWS

  • Morgantown native Maxx Biddle has been named coordinator of BeWell, the Carruth Center's satellite office for Health Sciences students. Biddle, who earned a master’s in counseling from WVU and worked with local community services + aims to bolster student well-being, will help guide future support efforts.  West Virginia University

SPORTS NEWS

  • WVU captured the Big 12 Championship on Mar. 8 with a 62-53 win (their best win of the season) over TCU in Kansas City. The Mountaineers now hope to earn the right to host an NCAA Tournament game in Morgantown as they await next weekend's matchup details.  MetroNews
  • Today, WVU baseball hosts Maryland at 2 p.m. at home while facing its toughest opponent yet. The Mountaineers have won all five past meetings against Maryland, and coach Steve Sabins plans to adjust his pitching strategy + hopes to climb back into the top 25.  The Dominion Post
