ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Monongalia County Sheriff Todd Forbes says a large pothole on I-79 near the I-68 split has damaged nearly 50 vehicles since early this month and motorists must slow down as repair work will start once the rain stops.  MetroNews

CULTURE NEWS

  • The WV Mountaineer Short Film Festival opened Friday evening at WVU Canady Creative Arts Center and continues through the weekend. Hosted by the WVU School of Art and Design, the free event features competitive screenings, international films and animation workshops for the local community + students.  WDTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, WVU launched Harpers Ferry, a new high-performance computing facility built to boost research and help faculty win federal grants. Students and researchers can register for system accounts and join upcoming technical workshops on parallel programming.  West Virginia University
  • WVU Police Department held its Spring Safety Fair from March 4-5 at the Student Recreation Center and Vandalia Lounge where students learned about campus safety resources, medical amnesty policies and career opportunities while visiting booths that offered free naloxone, condoms and raffle prizes (all part of a broader safety effort).  The Daily Athenaeum
  • WVU invites the community to meet the final candidates for the next permanent dean of the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences. Amy Lawton-Rauh presents Monday, March 9 (1–2 p.m. at Mountainlair Gluck Theatre) while Jason DeCaro follows Tuesday, March 10 (1:30–2:30 p.m. at Gluck Theatre).  West Virginia University
  • The House Education Committee tabled Senate Bill 745 Friday that would ban 23 additives such as aspartame and limit added sugars in school meals to 5% of daily calories by 2029. With only six days left in session, the measure faces a challenging path ahead.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting
  • Colin Street and Rozaireo Jones have been reelected to lead WVU Student Government Association for the academic year 2026 to 2027. They will be inaugurated Sunday, April 26 at the Mountainlair Ballrooms and plan to introduce new campus initiatives, including a farmers+ market and student mini parks.  WVU Today
  • The Physics and Astronomy Graduate Student Organization is hosting its annual Pie A Physics Professor event at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 11 in White Hall (Room 111). Donations will decide which professors get pied as proceeds help fund student activities, scholarships and a relocation closet.  West Virginia University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new report from the Ohio River Valley Institute finds that West Virginia may have tens of thousands of abandoned gas wells compared to roughly 16,000 tracked by the DEP; the institute recommends a production fee to fund decommissioning & create jobs while reducing pollution risks.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting

SPORTS NEWS

  • Notre Dame boys basketball played Parkersburg Catholic in a regional semifinal on Friday, Mar. 6. Local fans cheered as the teams battled for a chance to advance & showed strong teamwork in this key game.  WDTV
  • West Virginia defeated UCF 77-62 yesterday at Hope Coliseum on Senior Night. Honor Huff led with 24 points as the all-senior lineup secured an opening-round bye in the Big 12 Tournament.  MetroNews
  • WVU head coach Rich Rodriguez set the goal to win a championship in 2026 at his March 3 press conference, despite a 4-8 season and a 49-0 loss to Texas Tech in 2025. He is building a young team with high school talent and transfers to improve the program.  The Dominion Post
  • Bridgeport native Reese Allen has been selected as the 72nd Mountaineer Mascot. He said he feels honored and eager to embrace the role at upcoming local events.  WV News
