  • The Center for Community Engagement has opened nominations for its annual Excellence in Community Engagement Awards to honor achievements that reflect Mountaineer Values including Service, Curiosity, Respect, Accountability and Appreciation. Nominations must be submitted by March 30 and winners will be announced in April.  West Virginia University

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the House passed HB 4425, a bill that repealed current high school athlete transfer rules and shifted decisions to the WVSSAC and school principals — the measure now heads to the Senate for further debate.  WDTV
  • Maymester registration is open for students to earn up to five credits during a three-week, fully online term from May 11 to May 29; students should review courses and register before 4 p.m. on May 7 (registration deadline).  West Virginia University
  • George Cayton, a grounds supervisor and locksmith at Potomac State College, was featured in the February Staff Council Classified Staff Showcase for his long service that includes managing motor pool, event setup, and campus security — his dedication impacts daily campus life.  West Virginia University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The state’s Highway Safety Program is teaming up with local law enforcement to launch its Click It or Ticket campaign starting tomorrow and running through March 23; officers will issue fines for unbuckled drivers and improperly restrained children + aim to reduce the 40% rate of fatal crashes without seatbelts.  WDTV
  • The House of Delegates passed House Bill 4001 today as part of the Jobs First Opportunity Everywhere agenda, which sets up TEAM-WV to drive job growth statewide. Some lawmakers shared oversight concerns while others backed the plan’s swift approach.  MetroNews
  • Crews responded to a liquid nitrogen spill near Clark Hall on the WVU campus Wednesday morning; WVU Police alerted students and staff at 11:13 a.m. and officials confirmed the incident was resolved by 11:22 a.m.  WDTV

  • The latest edition of the WVU Health Report outlines new procedures to treat pancreatic cancer and aims to improve patient outcomes. It rolls out today from WVU Medicine, offering updated health insights for local residents.  WDTV
  • Local health officials announced the Monday Mental Health Movement, which introduces LEAD Peer Recovery Support Specialists to offer new mental health support services at community centers & clinics next Monday.  WDTV

SPORTS NEWS

  • University High wrestlers are set to chase a historic third straight state title tonight at Marshall Health Network Arena in Huntington as they compete in 13 weight classes plus several regional champions, with coach Ken Maisel urging them to stick to their winning routine.  The Dominion Post
  • Rich Rodriguez is revamping his coaching staff to create a family feel and improve the team after a 4-8 season. He hired longtime associate Rick Trickett and his son as quarterbacks coach while Larry Knight and others exited, a move Rodriguez says will build loyalty in Morgantown.  The Dominion Post
