EDUCATION NEWS

  • State Treasurer Larry Pack, Gov. Morrisey and Sen. Rucker marked a milestone as the Hope Scholarship now is open to every child, effective Monday. The program gives K-12 families financial help for tuition and homeschool expenses — sign-ups for the '26-'27 school year have begun.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting
  • WV University SGA held its debate Monday at Ming Hsieh Hall, where candidates discussed campus safety, scholarships and resources. Voting was open in-person Tuesday at the Mountainlair and The Rec Center, and online voting continues today and tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. + details on the website.  The Daily Athenaeum
  • The Muslim Student Association in partnership with Presidential Student Ambassadors will host a Fastathon to bring Muslims and non-Muslims together for a grand iftar on Wednesday, Mar. 11 at the Mountainlair Ballrooms.  West Virginia University
  • The West Virginia House of Delegates repealed a law that let high school athletes transfer schools without losing eligibility & passed the measure Tuesday. This change may affect school sports in upcoming seasons.  WV News
  • WVU Libraries is hosting research workshops for both new and experienced researchers to build data management skills. The sessions kick off on Monday, Mar. 9 with a focused RStudio session + visit the website to register.  West Virginia University
  • The Marion County Board of Education will revisit its decision not to renew superintendent Donna Heston’s contract at a special meeting scheduled for Thursday at 1 p.m. — her five-year tenure saw key facility upgrades and two schools earn Blue Ribbon honors.  MetroNews

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the House of Delegates passed HB4425 to repeal the 2023 transfer portal law for high school sports, prompting WVSSAC to likely restore previous transfer rules, and Tuesday, the Senate approved the Cohen Craddock Student Athlete Safety Act, which lets schools opt in to safety gear and review concussion protocols.  MetroNews

SPORTS NEWS

  • Three local girls basketball teams will compete for two North Region tournament spots today at 7:00 p.m. Morgantown High School hosts Preston at the Rowdie Center and University High School hosts Hedgesville at its gym — both winners will move on to play for the state title next week in Charleston.  The Dominion Post
  • Pitcher Chase Meyer, who led WVU with nine wins last season and was the lone West Virginia selection to the Preseason-All Big 12 Team, is no longer with the baseball program. Coach Sabins said Tuesday that Meyer’s departure marks a major change for the Mountaineers as they start the 2026 season.  MetroNews
