SPORTS NEWS

  • The 17th-ranked WVU women’s basketball team secured the No. 2 seed for the Big 12 tournament with their win over Cincinnati today, and coach Mark Kellogg — noting the challenge after losing star guard J.J. Quinerly — said his team remains determined to succeed.  The Dominion Post
  • Chansen Cole pitched five scoreless innings to give WVU a 9 to 1 win over Kennesaw State, improving the Mountaineers' record to 8 to 1. The final game of the series is set for today at noon in Georgia.  The Dominion Post
  • University High lost 67+51 to George Washington at Baker’s Ridge as senior Noah Lewis scored 32 points and helped pull the Patriots ahead early in the fourth quarter. Coach Joe Schmidle said the game helps the Hawks gauge their postseason approach ahead of a rematch with Spring Mills next week.  The Dominion Post
  • Reese Allen, a Harrison County native, was named the 72nd Mountaineer mascot during the basketball game on Feb. 28 at Hope Coliseum. He will take on the role at a rifle-passing ceremony at 6 p.m. April 17 at Mountainlair & a 5 p.m. reception at Vandalia Lounge.  West Virginia University
  • Bridgeport native Reese Allen was named the school’s 72nd Mountaineer mascot during Saturday’s WVU Men’s Basketball game against BYU in Morgantown. He will take over from current mascot Cade Kincaid at a Passing of the Rifle ceremony on Friday, Apr. 17.  WDTV
  • West Virginia men's basketball upset #19 BYU on Saturday, Feb. 28 in a game that energized local fans as the team powered past a tougher opponent. The win boosts momentum for the rest of the season.  WDTV
