COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hui Shen, a beloved community member, passed away in her Morgantown home Friday, Feb. 13 at age 85; friends and family will be received Tuesday, Feb. 17 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Hastings Funeral Home.  The Dominion Post

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Public Library on Spruce Street is hosting an exhibit on Black entrepreneurs through February, featuring figures like Charlene Marshall, Dr. William Waddell, John Hunt & Eddie Dooms. Curated with Main Street Morgantown and the Aull Center for History, the exhibit spotlights local business heritage.  The Dominion Post

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Mon Power and Potomac Edison filed for approval to build a new gas-fired plant at the Fort Martin site outside Morgantown. If approved by the Public Service Commission, construction will start in 2027 and the plant will be online by Dec. 31, 2031 (adding 70 MW of solar capacity at three sites).  The Dominion Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University Assembly met at 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16 at the College of Law Fitzsimmons Event Hall to discuss proposed amendments to the Faculty Constitution.  West Virginia University
  • All 122 West Virginia University School of Nursing Morgantown graduates earned a 100% first-time national exam pass rate today, demonstrating the program's strong performance (official reports confirm the milestone).  WV News
  • The CBS show The Visioneers with Zay Harding visited Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources on Monday, Feb. 16 to learn about the StickBug robot pollinator built by Yu Gu, Madhav Rijal and Trevor Smith; the segment began airing at 7:00.  West Virginia University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • House delegates introduced a bill to raise the minimum wage from $8.75 to $11 (a 26% increase) effective Jan. 1, 2027, and to update subminimum wages for workers under 20. It will affect hourly workers in retail, hospitality and food services and now awaits review by the House Energy Committee.  WDTV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Pavan Subramani, a 16-year-old Morgantown local, founded a nonprofit to work on drug prevention, aiming to curb early drug use. The organization plans workshops with local schools soon to educate young people.  WV News
  • During National Cancer Prevention Month, Dr. Hannah Hazard-Jenkins from the WVU Cancer Institute explained the value of lifestyle modifications (such as daily walking and smoking cessation) and early detection for cancer prevention. She stressed that small changes can lower preventable cancer risks in our community.  WDTV
