EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Senate Education Committee advanced SB657 today to create the Cohen Craddock Student Athlete Safety Act that would let schools opt in for safety gear and concussion training (Senate Education Chairwoman Amy Nichole Grady, R-Mason). The bill now moves to the Senate Finance Committee.  MetroNews
  • On Feb. 27, from 6:30-7:30 p.m., the WVU Planetarium hosts WVUniverse’s free talk where Katy Goodrich explains the dance of space plasma from our solar system and beyond. The event is open to all and concludes with a trivia game (rules apply).  West Virginia University
  • Mon County is breaking ground this summer on the new three-story Suncrest Middle School near West Virginia 705; it is set to open in fall 2028 with room for 499 students and features a media center, athletic field, and a 200-seat auditorium (designed by Williamson Shriver Architects).  The Dominion Post

  • A foster teen’s experience led to a proposed bill that would give foster kids a stronger voice, introduced by Katana Curry along with lead sponsor Del. Evan Worrell on Feb. 12 (lawmakers are set to review the measure).  MetroNews
  • Del. Shawn Fluharty said Thursday that West Virginia lost potential revenue as Ohio and Pennsylvania pushed forward with legal cannabis reforms, leaving the state at risk of missing billions. Future legislative action may reshape the economic outlook.  WV News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mon Medical Center in Morgantown earned the HeartCARE Center National Distinction of Excellence from the American College of Cardiology — its sixth award in seven years, highlighting its commitment to quality care.  WV News
  • A 2024 CDC report shows that West Virginia healthcare facilities reduced infections, with local clinics and hospitals seeing improved patient safety + care quality. Local health officials plan to continue infection control measures to maintain progress.  WV News
  • A study evaluating vinyasa yoga for heart health in local adults aged 18‑65 with high blood pressure is seeking participants who meet specific criteria.
