  • Nonprofits and community organizations will gather at the Community Engagement Expo to share their missions and explore volunteer, learning, and internship opportunities from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Feb. 12 at Mountainlair — faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to join.  West Virginia University

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Erin Kelley joins the Office of Student Accommodations as the University’s first digital accessibility program director and will coordinate technical training and compliance efforts across departments (including ITS and academic units) to set improved digital accessibility standards.  West Virginia University
  • WVU students can volunteer to teach STEM lessons to Scouts aged 12-18 at the National Scout Jamboree at Summit Bechtel Reserve in Glen Jean from July 19-31 and earn free admission, a $500 scholarship, 50 service hours, meals, housing, and extra perks (including WVU swag).  West Virginia University

  • Mon County Sheriff’s Office reminds fans to secure a designated sober ride for Super Bowl festivities. The office, collaborating with state and national highway safety programs, advises hosts to supply food & non-alcoholic drinks to help ensure everyone’s safe ride home.  WDTV
  • The FDA (Federal Drug Administration) announced new steps to help food makers move away from petroleum-based dyes while a West Virginia ban faces a court challenge.  WV News

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Friday, MCHD Dentistry hosted its 16th Give Kids A Smile Day by providing free cleanings, flossing, and fluoride treatments to 31 uninsured children + Dr. Kayla Workman said the event promoted healthy dental habits for life.  WDTV

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Gold & Blue Enterprises, WVU Athletics’ nonprofit arm, bought the former Hotel M property at 1400 Saratoga Avenue in Star City at auction for $3.975 million on Jan. 30, and ownership transferred to the Board of Governors; plans for the site remain undecided despite its strategic location near Hope Coliseum.  The Dominion Post

  • Trinity Christian earned a 59-49 win over fourth-ranked Clay-Battelle on Thursday in Sabraton. Led by Austin Porta’s 27 points, the Warriors now prepare to face Magnolia on the road and will host Frontier in the OVAC 1A semifinal on Feb. 10.  The Dominion Post
  • Don Spencer, 89, recently returned to the newly renovated Morgantown Ice Arena, where his decades of service brought safety innovations for goalies and launched local hockey programs — helping shape youth and collegiate play in the area.  The Dominion Post
  • University High wrestling team—top-ranked with 12 wrestlers in the top 10—is competing in the Dual Team State Championship at the WV State Fairgrounds today after winning last week's WSAZ Invitational; they will face Parkersburg South in the opening round.  The Dominion Post
  • West Virginia women’s basketball readies for a game against Arizona today at 2 p.m. at Hope Coliseum as the Mountaineers chase the top seed in the Big 12. Arizona, with an 11-11 overall record and 2-9 in conference play, will play without their injured guard which could slow their offense.  The Dominion Post
