EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ WVU’s School of Nursing is partnering with Johns Hopkins to create an ‘Inside Outside’ clinical track that gives nursing students community-based clinicals during their junior year. Eight students accepted next spring will begin clinicals in Fall 2027 at community sites including WVU Medicine outpatient clinics and county health departments. The Daily Athenaeum
- ➤ WVU physicists and University of Chicago researchers found that adjusting elements in iron telluride selenide can toggle exotic quantum states needed for advanced quantum computing. The study uses electron interactions as a control knob + may lead to practical topological superconductivity in ultra-thin films. West Virginia University
- ➤ Career Services announced three spring career fairs for students and alumni. The events include fairs on Feb. 11, Feb. 12 and Feb. 25 at Mountainlair Ballrooms and the Student Rec Center+ free headshots and online career tools will be offered. West Virginia University
- ➤ WVU President Michael Benson requested funding during Wednesday’s Finance Committee meeting for deferred maintenance, a Health Sciences expansion, and a new HVAC system at Hope Coliseum. NSF representatives will visit March 11 & 12 to review a major grant proposal. The Daily Athenaeum

- ➤ Senators Jay Taylor and Mike Oliverio advanced the Women’s Collegiate Sports Protection Act, SB 502, in the Senate Education Committee on Thursday morning to create endowment funds that would support scholarships, coaching + facilities for women’s collegiate sports. The bill now moves to the Senate Finance Committee for review. MetroNews
- ➤ FERC responded to Sen. Capito’s letter about concerns over poor upkeep at Cheat Lake Park and recreation areas managed by Lake Lynn Generation. The commission said it is investigating compliance issues and reviewing reports and filings (including a potential 2026 fee) to ensure the site meets standards. The Dominion Post

- ➤ The WVU baseball team was picked third in the 2026 Big 12 Preseason Coaches Poll—its highest ranking since joining the conference—and will open its season on Feb. 13 at Georgia Southern, with junior pitcher Chase Meyer earning a spot on the Preseason All-Big 12 Team. MetroNews
- ➤ At Fifth Third Arena yesterday, DJ Thomas led the Mountaineers past the Bearcats with clutch 3s and free throws for a 59-54 win. The team overcame a slow start to score 39 second-half points & secure its second road win. MetroNews
