  • The WVRHC will host Henry Doktorski (author of 13 nonfiction books) for a look into New Vrindaban’s Hare Krishna community at the Downtown Library's Milano Reading Room on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 4 p.m.; Dr. Alex Snow of WVU will introduce the talk.  West Virginia University

EDUCATION NEWS

  • WVU recognized 10 employees as the inaugural Outstanding Mountaineer Award recipients at the WVU Impact Award event on Wednesday, Jan. 21. The award honors team members from six departments for their exceptional contributions to campus operations and student services.  West Virginia University
  • WVU Libraries is launching research workshops starting Tuesday, Jan. 27 (focused on using Zotero for citations) at the Morgantown campus. Researchers can view the schedule and register to boost their research skills.  West Virginia University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local legislators debated HB 4081 to help college students with food and hygiene needs by offering potential grant funding without using state money; the bill passed 71 to 22 and now moves to the Senate.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting

HEALTH NEWS

  • A research team at WVU is studying a gene therapy to restore sight in people with inherited blindness in mice, showing promising results — the study is funded by a $1.4M National Eye Institute grant and will guide future clinical trials at the expanded WVU Eye Institute.  West Virginia University
  • WVU Medicine Golisano Children’s was ranked among the Top 50 hospitals for patient safety and quality, highlighting its dedication to caring for patients and families — a national nod to its continued excellence in Morgantown.  WV News

  • Morgantown's high school boys basketball team holds the No. 1 ranking in Class AAAA for Week 2 — determined by 10 local radio broadcasters and sports writers. Poll updates will be released each Friday through the regular season to reflect total points and first-place votes.  MetroNews
  • WVU women’s basketball prepared for a defensive battle today as they face BYU in Provo at 9:30 p.m. In recent games the team held top offenses to low scores and aims to slow BYU’s 3-point game with strong inside play.  The Dominion Post
  • Longtime Mountaineers bandits coach Jeff Casteel retired ahead of the 2026 season at WVU, with Rich Rodriguez praising his career contributions. WVU also hired Larry Knight from Arkansas State as a specialist to strengthen its pass rush.  The Dominion Post
  • Freshman Maddie Ancell scored a game-high 25 points to lead Morgantown High past University High 66-39 on Thursday night – she hit four 3-pointers during a 14-2 run that powered the comeback. Coach John Fowkes noted Ancell stepped up amid injury challenges.  The Dominion Post
  • Fifteen high school esports teams competed Friday at WVU’s West Virginia Scholastic Esports League Fall Finals. They played Overwatch 2 + Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and joined workshops with varsity players to boost statewide interest in esports.  WDTV
