EDUCATION NEWS

  • West Virginia University’s Statler College hosted its fourth VEX robotics competition on Sunday afternoon in Morgantown, where middle school teams built and competed with their robots, and winners will advance to a state championship at Fairmont State University on March 8.  WDTV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Cam Vaughn, WVU's top receiver, is set to transfer to Miami—he will join the Hurricanes ahead of their Jan. 19 National Championship game against Indiana. His move comes after a surprising social media reversal that left the Mountaineers with a big loss.  The Dominion Post
  • The WVU women’s basketball team beat Iowa State 83-70 on Sunday in Ames. Kierra Wheeler scored a season-high 25 points to secure WVU’s 4-0 road record, and they will face No. 13 TCU at 7 p.m. Wednesday.  The Dominion Post
  • The Gilmer County girls basketball team begins its Class A state title defense as coach Amy Chapman, who reached her 300th win on Dec. 27, readies a season with new guards and veterans. The team is 5-0 after Friday's win and will face top opponents in February.  MetroNews
  • WVU signed kicker Jack Cassidy from Western Kentucky on Sunday afternoon; he made all three of his field goals in limited play and enters a competitive race with Alabama transfer Peter Notaro for the starting role. Former punter Pat McAfee (supporting Cassidy) said his talent should boost the team’s success.  The Dominion Post
  • Former Mountaineer receiver Rodney Gallagher has transferred to Arizona and will face WVU later this season in a home game—a homecoming for the Uniontown native. He played three seasons with the team before leaving amid a recent wave of transfers.  The Dominion Post
  • Veteran Clemson tight end Josh Sapp committed to the Mountaineers on Sunday night to help fill the tight end gap after Grayson Barnes' departure. Sapp brings extensive college football experience and is expected to boost the run-heavy offense in Morgantown.  The Dominion Post
