  • United Way of Mon & Preston Counties has signed a contract with Morgantown Community Resources to manage Hazel’s House of Hope and named Dr. Jessica Thompson as Director of Operations; the agency will handle daily operations while the owner stays involved in planned improvements.  WDTV
  • Sierra Club WV hosted Quilting for Community on Jan. 7 at The Co-Op on Pleasant Street + neighbors gathered to explore how art can spark climate action. Future biweekly sessions will build connections and creativity in the community.  The Dominion Post

BUSINESS NEWS

  • NCWV airport will add new flights due to a new partnership with SkyWest (details are to be announced soon). The expanded schedule is expected to offer more travel options for local passengers.  WDTV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Jacob's Ladder received $1M in funding from the West Virginia First Foundation on Thursday, Jan. 8 (a record amount) and will use the money to expand its community programs.  WDTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • WVU hired Beverly Wendland as its new provost and vice president for academic affairs after a national search. She will join the leadership team on July 1 (drawing on her extensive experience at Washington University in St. Louis) to advance academic excellence across all disciplines.  WVU Today
  • Middle school students from Huff Consolidated (the only WV school in the semi-finals) advanced in Samsung's Solve for Tomorrow contest by creating an affordable water purification system to address local water quality issues; the team of 15 competes nationwide for a $10,000 prize package and mentorship.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials will reexamine mobile food vendor rules after ongoing issues with cleaning and crowding, proposing to move nighttime operations to a designated spot (Marketplace Pavilion at 430 Spruce Street) and update licensing to balance vendor support with downtown business needs.  The Dominion Post

SPORTS NEWS

  • Michael Hawkins transferred to WVU from Oklahoma and now will compete for a starting role with the Mountaineers as coach Rich Rodriguez emphasizes his speed and work ethic (he still must improve his throwing accuracy).  The Dominion Post
  • West Virginia boosts its offensive line as Kansas State transfer Devin Vass commits Wednesday night after a Tuesday visit. He is the first addition under coach Rich Rodriguez and the Mountaineers plan to improve pass protection for 2026 — additional linemen are likely to be added soon.  The Dominion Post
  • LSU wide receiver TaRon Francis committed to WVU after visiting Morgantown on Wednesday — his move adds another young talent to strengthen the Mountaineers' receiver room following recent departures.  The Dominion Post
  • University High's wrestling team held a ribbon-cutting on Wednesday night for a new locker room named after head coach Ken Maisel — the space includes plaques honoring his son and late mother, and the team secured a 74-3 win over their Mohawk rivals.  The Dominion Post
