ECONOMY NEWS

  • WVU and Marshall University’s West Virginia Grant Resource Centers helped local clients secure over $51M in funding statewide via 124 awards that created or sustained 270 jobs since Jan. 1, 2023. The initiative also trained over 3,444 residents through workshops and webinars.  West Virginia University

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Four WVU alumni, Michael J. Florio, Nitin N. Kumbhani, Mary Ellen Mazey and Morris Morrison, will be inducted into the Academy of Distinguished Alumni at a Jan. 30 ceremony at the Erickson Alumni Center — they will also be honored at a WVU vs. Baylor game on Jan. 31 at the Hope Coliseum.  WVU Today
  • Mylan Park is offering winter programs for kids that include Little Bodies in Balance for toddlers, Tot Sports classes on Saturdays starting January 10, and weekend swimming lessons at the Aquatic Center beginning January 11. Programs run through March and help children ages 3 to 12 build coordination and water skills.  Morgantown Magazine
  • University IT services say rising demand for AI has made memory and SSD parts scarce, and prices for desktop and laptop computers will soon increase. Units planning purchases this fiscal year should complete purchases now & await further pricing updates.  West Virginia University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Secretary of State Kris Warner announced a statewide contest for 8th graders to design “I Voted!” stickers that reflect civic pride and local heritage, with entries due by Jan. 27. The winner’s design will be featured after judging — inspiring the next generation of voters.  WDTV
  • WVDNR reminds hunters and anglers that 2025 licenses and stamps expired on Dec. 31 and that new 2026 licenses and stamps must be purchased before any outdoor trips.  WV News
  • Gov. Patrick Morrisey plans to work with lawmakers to expand Star Academies (schools-within-a-school that support STEM learning) to reduce the nearly 6,000 children in the child welfare system. Lawmakers will review the proposal during the 60-day legislative session starting Jan. 14.  WDTV

HEALTH NEWS

  • West Virginia received nearly $200 million in a federal Rural Health Transformation award to modernize health care by boosting preventive care, telehealth & worker recruitment. Health Secretary Dr. Singh stressed the funds will soon strengthen rural care but will not offset pending Medicaid cuts affecting coverage.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting

SPORTS NEWS

  • West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez added Memphis safety Kamari Wilson from the transfer portal on Wednesday. Wilson, who played at Florida, Arizona State, and Memphis, is expected to boost the Mountaineers' defense for the upcoming 2026 season (his veteran presence fills a key need in the secondary).  The Dominion Post
  • West Virginia has added Illinois linebacker Malachi Hood and Bowling Green pass rusher David Afogho to the team to bolster its defense—both transfers offer experienced play after key players graduated.  The Dominion Post
  • No. 5 Parkersburg beat No. 2 Morgantown High 56-38 Tuesday night at the Rowdie Center with a 20-2 run in the final five minutes. Coach John Fowkes praised his team’s resilience — they will regroup ahead of their next game at Keyser next Friday.  The Dominion Post
  • Pass rusher & running back Curtis Jones Jr. announced on social media that he is entering the transfer portal. His departure leaves the team with limited running back depth as the Mountaineers prepare for future recruiting and incoming talent.  The Dominion Post
